EDF Energy is the UK retail and generation arm of French utility ร‰lectricitรฉ de France. It operates eight nuclear power stations in the UK and is building Hinkley Point C โ€” the UK's first new nuclear plant in a generation. On the retail side it serves around 2.4 million homes with electricity and gas.

Available Tariffs

Standard Variable Variable

EDF's default tariff, priced at the regional Ofgem price cap and typically changing every January, April, July and October. No exit fee โ€” a fallback for customers not on a fixed deal.

Simply Tracker Fixed term, cap-linked

Despite the name it doesn't track daily wholesale prices โ€” it follows Standard Variable but with a standing-charge discount (around 6.85p/day per fuel, roughly ยฃ50/year dual fuel). An exit fee applies; get the exact figure from your live quote.

Simply Fixed Fixed (term varies)

EDF's conventional fixed tariff family โ€” fixed unit rates and standing charges, regional pricing, and a product-specific exit fee. EDF runs several Simply Fixed versions at once, so check the exact term and exit fee on your quote.

FreePhase Dynamic Smart / 3-rate

A three-rate electricity tariff (Green 11pmโ€“6am, Amber 6amโ€“4pm & 7pmโ€“11pm, Red 4pmโ€“7pm) recalculated daily from Nord Pool wholesale prices. Requires a half-hourly smart meter.

FreePhase Static Smart / 3-rate (fixed)

The same Green/Amber/Red structure as FreePhase Dynamic, but with the three rates fixed for the term (usually 12 months) rather than changing daily.

FreePhase Low Standing Charge Trial Trial discount

A one-year trial offering a ยฃ6.25 monthly discount per fuel for eligible lower-use FreePhase customers.

GoElectric EV Tariff (fixed)

A dedicated EV tariff with a 6.99p/kWh overnight rate from 11pmโ€“6am, fixed for one year. Requires an EV and a connected smart meter.

Pod Point Plug and Power EV Tariff + charger

A two-year fixed EV tariff bundling a 6.49p/kWh overnight rate with a Pod Point home charger and installation.

Heat Pump Tracker Time of use (heat pump)

A 10p/kWh discount during six daily hours for homes with an installed heat pump and smart meter.

✓ Pros

  • Major UK electricity generator โ€” not just a retailer
  • Significant low-carbon generation from nuclear fleet
  • EV-specific tariffs with competitive overnight rates
  • Reasonably strong customer service for a large supplier
  • Stable, well-capitalised parent company

✗ Cons

  • Unit rates often higher than challenger suppliers
  • Innovation lags behind suppliers like Octopus
  • Hinkley Point C construction delays and cost overruns widely reported
  • Fewer tariff options than some competitors

Switching Advice

Switching to or from EDF is a standard 17โ€“21 day process. Variable tariffs have no exit fees. Check your fixed tariff contract for any exit fees before switching.

🌿 Green Credentials

EDF generates significant low-carbon electricity from its nuclear fleet. Nuclear power is zero-carbon but not renewable. Its retail green tariffs are backed by REGO certificates.
